 Brief Highlights 

 

● Sir Alfred Pope was born enslaved 1821 in North Carolina.

● He married Hannah Cole in 1847.

● Thus this was his relationship to the Tutor place.

● He took part in the unsuccessful escape of the 77 enslaved

men and women on the Schooner Pearl.

● Alfred Pope's wife Hannahreceived manumission after the death of

their slave master Carter.

● Pope and his wife opened up the Freedmen Bank account in 1871.

 

My Research Challenge:

● While at the National Archive, I had suspected that he may

have served in the Civil War.

● While trying to prove that this is correct, I did not uncover

enough information to support my premise that Alfred Pope

served in the Civil War.

●  I reached this conclusion because there were no photos nor 

enough textual evidence to support my theory.
